Horry Guignard House Rehabilitation
BOUDREAUX has maintained a long-standing relationship with the Horry-Guignard House, one of Columbia’s oldest surviving residences, first engaging with the property in 2010. Built before 1813 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as protected as a Grade I Local Landmark, the home remains an important cultural asset within the University of South Carolina campus. Our team was originally commissioned to complete a comprehensive historic conditions assessment, developing both short- and long-term preservation recommendations to guide the University’s stewardship of the property.
Following the assessment, we led a phased exterior rehabilitation addressing critical preservation priorities, including structural stabilization of the front porch, restoration of historic windows, repair of masonry chimneys and piers, replacement of deteriorated siding and stucco with historically appropriate materials, and installation of a new roof, gutters, and downspouts. The work carefully balanced preservation with long-term durability while protecting original historic elements, including hand-hewn porch beams attributed to Colonel Peter Horry.
Recently, the firm completed a new chapter in the building’s history through the adaptive reuse renovation for USC’s Veterans Law Clinic. Sensitive interior renovations introduced ADA accessibility, offices, conference areas, and teaching spaces while thoughtfully reinforcing the home’s Colonial character and continuing its legacy of public service.
